Place : In, On and At

Many of our students get confused with in, on and at. In the lesson, we will discuss the use of these prepositions when talking about – place.

IN

We use the word in to describe something that is INSIDE or in a enclosed space.

  • I am in a car
  • we are in the classroom
  • they are in the bar
  • The keys are in my pocket
  • The milk is in the fridge

All these examples describe things are are inside other things.

ON

We use the word ON to describe something or someone that is ON TOP of something else. On the surface of something.

  • I am on a motorbike
  • We are sat on a wall
  • They are standing on the roof
  • The car keys are on the table
  • The Dinner is already on the table
  • We are on the beach

All these examples describe things are are ON other things.

AT

We use the word AT to describe something or someone that is AT a place or a point.

  • I am at school
  • We are at the train station
  • They are at the front door
  • The car is being fixed at the garage

All these examples describe something or someone that is AT a place or point.

However, please notice that sometimes these rules don’t apply -

  • You can be at the radio station but be on the radio.
  • You can be in a phone box but on the phone.
  • You are in a car but on a train and plane.
  • You can be at work but on a job.
